So beautiful, Claire. I was scrolling articles and recognized the picture your brother. I’m getting to know him. A good read about his changes in correspondence and your process of understanding. It’s beautiful that Sammy’s friendship has helped you learn more. Kudos for all the effort you have sown into this project. Your voice is strongly you.
Aw, thank you Linda. You are so kind and I appreciate you taking the time to read through my stories about my bro. And yes, Sammy has been such a ray of light in my life when things get dark or confusing or when I feel annoyed with my brother. He puts things in perspective and inspires me to do better and live my life each day with meaning and purpose, but most importantly, love. I am grateful for him, and for you too. Thank you again for your support. It brings me hope that my stories are resonating with at least one person, and I hope it continues to spark empathy for those who made life-altering mistakes, like my bro.
Thanks for the lovely reply! I am spotty about substack and only now looking in again. Resolved to get better at going here because the reading is so GOOD !
Claire, I hate to mention this, but schizophrenia? The rapid cycling of topics, the conspiracy feel. Is there a family history? Can he be tested? He's the right age for onset.
Hi Gayle, I wouldn't rule that out. I can't be certain of family history either b/c I never knew my grandparents, who all died pretty early, most before I was born. He could probably ask to see the counselor or psychiatrist (not sure if they have one?), but he isn't motivated to do that and would just deny that he's mentally unstable. If anything, all of the drug usage he's done (speed, heroin, prescription drugs) has affected his mental state of mind, then, compounded with prison and isolation, it's spiraling. :/
